What was the sequence of events that brought you to Pro Fitness? I had been at another gym previously and wasn’t getting any satisfaction whatsoever.  One of my coworkers lost a lot of weight and I was inspired.  I made up my mind that I needed to get my weight off so I told an old trainer about my goal and she said this was the place to go.  She knew I’d be comfortable here and would get exactly what I needed. I remember walking in the door for the first time and could not believe how personable everyone was.

Why did you join?  What was your initial goal? I joined for weight loss.  I put on 120 pounds in 12 years so my main goal was only to lose weight.

What is the one thing that was difficult for you to overcome during your journey?  How did you overcome it? Nothing has been hard!!!  I started the weight loss challenge two weeks ago, and Matt makes it so simple.  I don’t have a problem getting in here in the morning.  Matt comes in for me at 5:00 am every morning.  Everything is going great and I haven’t had a struggle. I’ve had no problem with the foods I’m eating because everything is laid out for me.  Attitude makes a difference too.  Don’t get me wrong, there are days when I want to kick Matt’s butt when I’ve felt the closest I’ve ever felt to throwing up, but I know he’s doing it for my own good!

During what period did you start seeing results?  What do you attribute the results? It’s only been three weeks and I already see progress. I look forward to getting here in the morning.  Mondays I come twice a day.   I see my health getting better every day I’m here.  When I came in here it took me 30 minutes to walk a mile.  Now I can do two miles in 27 minutes!  I have more energy.  I am a more get up and go person.  I don’t get tired in the afternoons anymore.  My family is happy for me because over the last 12 years I’ve struggled with my weight.

What advice would you give someone that is looking to improve their health? Take small baby steps to start!  It is all about attitude.  Be in the right mindset, set small goals, and go at it.  Take it one day at a time—that’s al you can do!

What is your next goal? Right now we are working on being able to do 25 pushups.  The weight loss challenges will also continue.  We have a goal to lose 160 pounds total.  I will get down to 200 pounds and stay there.  I made up my mind and I am on a mission!

What was the sequence of events that brought you to Pro Fitness? Last November, I literally had a mental breakdown!  I was at a super low point in my life.  It was awful.  My self-esteem and confidence was at an all time low. I was having a conversation with a good friend and she helped me realize that I needed to feel good about myself before I could feel good about anything else.

Why did you join?  What was your initial goal? My initial goal was to be more physically fit and lose some weight.  I knew I needed to improve my health.  Two of my grandparents had diabetes, and high cholesterol and heart disease run in my family.  I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and I knew getting help and changing it later in life would be harder than if I just changed it now.

What is the one thing that was difficult for you to overcome during your journey? How did you overcome it? I was not happy with other certain things in my life, and I needed to get my physical well being in order before I could make those things better.  Standing up in three weddings this summer helped.  It was also to a point where my doctor told me I needed to lose weight; she had actually been telling me for years!  I would just say to myself, “I am fine with how I look.”

During what period did you start seeing results?  What do you attribute the results to? I started with a weight-loss challenge and changed what I was eating.  I worked out 3-4 times per week.  I lost 11 pounds during the weight loss challenge and from there; I continued to train with Kalyn twice a week.  I also do cardio on my own two days a week.  It’s become a lifestyle change for me.  I still eat some of the foods I used to eat once in a while, but for the first 4-5 months I was super strict!

What advice would you give someone that is looking to improve their health? My journey has not been easy at all!  Working out with a personal trainer made me accountable.  The cost of working out with a personal trainer is so worth it!  I am doing it for my health now so I don’t end up in the hospital with heart disease and pay for it later!  As far as improving your diet goes, you will really realize that once you start eating better, you start feeling better, and you will notice that when you do treat yourself, it doesn’t agree with you!

What is your next goal? I will continue working out with Kalyn after the weddings are done.  It’s become so much more than just losing weight to stand up in weddings.  I want to be in the best shape of my life.  Obesity also runs in my family, so I know maintaining a healthy weight is going to take a lot of work but since it makes me healthier and happier it is so worth it!

What was the sequence of events that brought you to Pro Fitness? A friend of mine did the weight loss challenge and won it!  I noticed he had lost a lot of weight and thought, “If he could do it, I could do it!”

Why did you join?  What was your initial goal? I was 30 pounds overweight and my metabolism was slowing down. I knew I needed something that would be more structured and would work.  I had Lost 20 pounds and put it back on numerous times!  I was tired of the “yo-yo” and knew I needed to make a change for good!  I always had the attitude, “If you work out hard enough you can eat whatever you want!”  I never stuck with what I was doing and didn’t have the education on nutrition that I have now.

What is the one thing that was difficult for you to overcome during your journey? How did you overcome it? Two days in, I decided not to drink.  I learned how to say no!  Our family celebrations always involve alcohol, and being that it was around the holidays, we were having several family celebrations!  My family was saying, “What is going on, Tom?!?  Are you okay?  Are you sick?”  They could not believe it.  Now, I drink when I want to drink, not because I feel like I have to.  I learned to control my drinking, not let it control me.  I’ve learned self-control.  I can have one beer and I am happy.

During what period did you start seeing results?  What do you attribute the results to? I was educated on when and what to eat. I stopped eating late at night, and worked out twice a day for 42 days.  I said I would never run again, but I did run the Bellin.  I had never run 6 miles before in my life!  I was determined to win the weight loss challenge!  Working out with a personal trainer made me accountable. After the weight loss challenge, my cholesterol improved—my doctor could not believe my results!  I blew the numbers out of the water!

What advice would you give someone that is looking to improve their health? Get some nutritional information about when and what to eat.  Get into some kind of a routine as far as physical activity goes.  It helps to go someplace where you can work out with other people.  I have equipment at home but it is way more fun to workout with other people!  Always have goals.  Use your personal training sessions to keep yourself accountable—they are not only an investment in your health, but it is also a form of entertainment.  You can go to a basketball game, a football game, or a concert and it generally costs you money.  There are all kinds of entertainers in Pro Fitness!!!

What is your next goal? I just purchased a bike!  I never thought I would spend so much money on a bike, but it is something I enjoy doing.  I’m looking forward to doing a couple competitive rides.  I will to lose another 10 pounds and stay there!
